Crowns are like a protective jacket that sits over a tooth.
In virtually all cases, we use all-ceramic crowns. The latest materials mean that ceramic crowns are just as strong as metal crowns but look much better!
When a tooth is very broken down, very discoloured or heavily filled - a crown is needed to both restore and protect the remaining tooth.
All ceramic crowns can be used to:
They can be used on their own or as part of a bigger smile makeover.
Crowns should look and function at their best for 10-15 years. After that time some of the surface luster may have dulled or margins become more visible but replacement is likely to be optional rather than a clinical requirement.
The margins of a new crown will be completely hidden so your new crowns looks just like a real tooth. All ceramic crowns also have no dark metal inside which can make the margin more visible.
Matching a crown perfectly to natural teeth is very hard! We use the latest digital techniques and also custom shade taking by technicians to ensure the results are beyond expectations.
Any dental procedure must be carefully planned and perfectly executed. Our clinicians are highly experienced in placing crowns to a very high standard.
There are several key stages involved:
1.Preparation for the crown. This often involves numbing the tooth before the tooth is carefully reduced in size to create space for the crown. Impressions or a scan are then taken to allow the crown to be custom made in the laboratory. Before you leave, a great looking, well fitting temporary is cemented.
2.If at the front of the mouth, maybe see the technician for a custom shade.
3.Fit the real crown with an adhesive cement.
Mr Main and now Mr Russell have been the most reassuring, kind and knowledgeable dentists I've been to see - thank you both!
